After a tumultuous 2008 that brought an increase in home foreclosures and the decline of the stock market, the end
of long-standing businesses and the beginning of a new presidency, it is an understatement to say we face challenging times ahead. As budgets are cut and spending is reduced, we are all concerned about how the changes in the financial climate will affect learning and development. Now is the time for us as an organization to draw together and exchange ideas on how to weather this latest storm.

It is my pleasure to serve a second term as president of HM ASTD working with the board of directors — a wonderful group of people who devote countless hours performing the tasks that keep this chapter running smoothly. I am very grateful for all the support they have given me, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire board for their hard work this past year. Their continued dedication to this organization enables our members to enjoy the benefits associated with having a local chapter of ASTD.

When the going gets tough, the tough go to the Annual Workplace Learning and Performance Conference! Despite the
economic challenges everyone is facing these days, the attendance at our annual conference indicates that workplace learning and employee development remains an important part of our business culture and will play an integral part of not only helping companies survive, but thrive. Mike Mears, founder of the Central Intelligence Agency’s Leadership Academy, kicked off the day with examples of how great leaders inspire those around them.

I am Proud to Say Spring is Here! How we have longed for this change in seasons, once again. With spring comes new growth, new energy and revitalization, and it doesn’t stop with nature! The Hudson- Mohawk Chapter of ASTD also responds to this passage of time with new ways in which we can service our membership and expand our own horizons.

Recently, our chapter became a member of the Albany-Colonie Chamber of Commerce. This opportunity would not have happened if it weren’t for a few people: Dale Kelley and Vinny Sastri, who were our direct and active links to the Chamber representatives, and Tom Wersten, who made it financially feasible for us to pursue membership on a long-term basis due to all of his meticulous, time-consuming work on our books. Thank you all so much! This is a great move for us!

As the leaves begin to change, we know that autumn has arrived. However, leaves are not the only things changing this fall in the world of HM-ASTD. Over the summer months, the board has gone through a few changes. Christopher Perez, VP Special Events will be leaving us, as he will be re-locating to Philadelphia. Although we are happy for him that he will be starting a new adventure, we are sorry to see him go. He has been at the helm of the Annual Conference Committee for the past two years and has done an outstanding job! We wish him luck in Pennsylvania!!

Natalie Williams will be assuming the VP Special Events position, stepping back into her former role of Annual Conference Chair. Natalie has not only chaired the committee in previous years, she has continued to serve on the committee in numerous capacities, most recently overseeing the Conference Bookstore. Many thanks go to Natalie for taking on this very important task.
